Streaming services became popular for their convenience, but Paramount+ has strained RuPaul's Drag Race's relationship with its audience. With episodes releasing at 3 am ET, fans are no longer able to share live reactions to the series together like they once were. Additionally, gay bars were slammed by the COVID-19 pandemic and are in desperate need of patrons that weekly Drag Race viewings would have provided. Unfortunately, the decision to air RuPaul's Drag Race on Paramount+ has taken away the shared viewing experience. Not only did this help those businesses, but it also provided a community space for queer people to bond and celebrate their favorite performers. When RuPaul's Drag Race was releasing episodes every week, LGBTQIA+ bars would be packed with fans of the series collected to watch the events of a new episode live. In addition to the fans' hesitance to subscribe to another streaming service for one show, Drag Race's switch to Paramount+ has robbed audiences of the collective viewing experience that this drag series has been known for. It costs $10 a month for Paramount+'s premium, commercial-free subscription. Because Drag Race has always been accessible on cable, fans couldn't grapple with the monthly charge they suddenly have to pay to keep up with their favorite drag performers in the cast of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 6. While executives believe that it is a smart strategic play to move RuPaul's hit series to Paramount+, many fans strongly disagree. Because RuPaul's Drag Race is one of ViacomCBS's most successful television franchises, it makes sense for the conglomerate's Paramount+ streaming service to turn Drag Race into an exclusive. Instead of carrying on with the proven success of airing on VH1, the drag competition was launched on the burgeoning streaming service Paramount+.
